Watching the Gap between the Breaths

When we focus on the gap between things - like the space between the clouds in the sky, between the objects on a table, or the spaces of silence between notes in a piece of music - we are guided to a place of pure spaciousness inside ourselves. We are naturally drawn into a calm yet vibrant awareness which lies beneath the normal chatter of our everyday mind. This alive, spacious awareness pulsates in the gaps between our thoughts. Noticing the space between things naturally helps that gap between our thoughts to expand, slowing the mind chatter, and opening us up to this pure presence within.

So for July here is a technique where we watch the gap between our in- and out-breaths to guide us to this inner spaciousness.

Find a place where you can sit undisturbed for around twenty minutes. Close your eyes and make sure your spine is upright yet relaxed. Begin by noticing your breathing pattern as it is -  not doing anything with your breathing but simply receiving it. After a few minutes of attending to your breathing, gradually bring your attention to rest at the point between the in-breath and the out-breath. And then watch the point between the out-breath and the in-breath. Keep going in this way, noticing the gap between the breaths.

When you complete the practice take a few moments to notice how you are in your body, mind and emotions.
