"When, with a one-pointed and thought free mind, a seeker contemplates his whole body or the entire universe all at once as being of the nature of Consciousness, he experiences the supreme Awakening".
(Vijnana Bhairava Tantra)
The Tantras are ancient yogic texts dating back to 10th century India, which outline very practical and simple methods of meditation. Tantra simply means 'technique' and these methods of meditation were known as the ‘royal path’ as they were seen as a fast-track way of attaining heightened states of calm, awareness and inner bliss. Tantra say that we don't have to meditate for decades to taste a depth of stillness, peace and blissful inner expansion; it is available right now to any one of us.
Each meditation method involve bringing our attention to some object, such as our breath or our senses; or visualising an inner object, such as light moving within the body, or our body empty like space. As we hold our attention on the object, the mind stabilises and true presence is revealed.
The practices work by increasing the energy within the body, which then acts as a flame to light our consciousness. As a result our mind becomes still, calm and present and our body relaxed, vibrant and vital.
The meditation also improves our focus and concentration, and helps us to access our creative potential and to discover the peace and equanimity which lie at the core of our being.
This day long course led by Zeenat Cameron, will be practically focused, with guided meditation and time for sharing and discussion in the group. We will work specifically with several of the methods given in the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, which describes 112 methods for reaching deep states of meditation and expanded consciousness. The text is ancient yet timeless, and is as applicable to the daily life of a modern Westerner as it was that of a 10th century Indian.
The day is suitable for both beginners and more experienced meditators, and is also suitable for those practising related disciplines, such as yoga.
