Gaze upon an Object as if for the First Time.

Meditation helps us to see things with fresh eyes - it brings renewal and vitality to our experiencing of the world. It does so because in deep meditation the old habits of our minds, our unconscious robotic ways of seeing, begin to naturally fall away. Rather than perceive the world through our old mental filters, or habitually react out of the past, we can see directly and become present and spontaneously open to each unfolding moment. We can look upon any experience, any person, or any object, with the wonder and awe of a small child.

January's technique is really very simple. Choose an object - any object - a flower, the tree outside your window, a painting, your beloved's face, or something more mundane that you hardly ever notice, like a cup, a chair, or your shoes. Give the object your full attention, receiving it through your eyes and being mindful of its qualities. Take your time and gaze upon it as if for the first time. If you get distracted, simply notice this and come back to the meditation.

You can do this meditation anywhere - at home, in the park, on the bus. Notice what changes in the quality of your experience when you really allow yourself to be present in this way.
