The mind is the object of the enquiry, the subject of the enquiry and the method of the enquiry.
(Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama).
This day long course is suitable for those with some previous experience of meditation. During the day we will practice ‘mindfulness of mind’ meditation, one of the key foundations of mindfulness.
When we normally think of our mind we think of constant activity – the chatter and turbulence of our everyday thoughts and emotions. This pervasive ordinary mind is what we seek to master when we take up meditation. Yet the mind is also the source of all restfulness, watchfulness and spaciousness - in other words of the all-encompassing wisdom and peace that allows us to respond to life intelligently, spontaneously and with joy. In the Buddhist, Tantra and Yoga traditions this higher aspect of the mind is known as ‘Buddhi’.
In mindfulness of mind practice, our mind becomes the working basis, the focus, of our practice of meditation. Through moment-to-moment awareness, just being with the processes and content of the mind as they arise, without judgement, we come to recognise the patterns of our everyday mind. This helps us step back from the everyday mind, not judging or repressing it but simply letting it be, and a deep spaciousness is revealed.
In observing the mechanisms of our mind we also meet its more enlightened aspects – its luminous intelligence, awareness and stillness - and Buddhi mind is revealed.
During the class all meditation practices will be guided by Zeenat Cameron, and we will explore several meditation techniques to directly experience these different aspects of our mind. To support us and inform our practice, there will also be teaching on Buddhist and Yoga approaches to the mind, including the four functions of the mind and the foundations of mindfulness meditation. There will also be ample time for sharing and discussion.
